Environmentally Conscious
Environmentally Conscious Metal Recycling
At Metalico, we’re all about “green.” Providing you with “green” – cash for your scrap metal; and being “green” – a leader in metal recycling and reuse.
Sustainability is not only a key part of our business model as a recycler, but also an important consideration in how we carry out our work as responsible stewards of our environment.
The Metalico Environmental Commitment
- All incoming materials are handled with sensitivity to the environment
- Every pound of incoming metal passes through our radiation detection system
- We carefully handle oil and coolants more strictly than government regulations mandate
- Recycling of metals saves natural resources, energy, and consumption of scarce landfill space
- All our locations offer easy access, quick payment and fair prices to all of our customers – this trust factor encourages additional recycling of metal scrap, such as siding, window frames and doors, that typically end up in landfills
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized Metalico as a Green Power Partner
- Metalico continues to contribute to efforts to use renewable energy, reduce pollution and encourage recycling
Did You Know …
- Recycling aluminum cans saves 95 percent of the energy used to make these cans from virgin ore
- Using recycled scrap iron and steel reduces the use of virgin iron ore, among other environmental benefits. Every ton of new steel made from scrap steel conserves:
- 2,500 lb of iron ore
- 1,400 lb of coal
- 120 lb of limestone
- For each pound of aluminum recovered, Americans save the energy resources needed to generate about 7.5 kilowatt-hours of electricity. That's enough energy saved each year by recycling aluminum to meet the lighting needs of a city the size of Pittsburgh, PA for six years.
- Beverage containers represent less than 20 percent of the materials collected in curbside recycling programs and they generate up to 70 percent of total scrap value. Aluminum cans are the most valuable commodity to curbside programs helping to pay for the collection of other containers.
- By using recycled metals, CO2 emissions are reduced in the manufacturing process. Given the approximately 12.6 million vehicles recycled each year by the automotive recycling industry, GHG emissions are reduced by over 30 million metric tons per year.
